OKLAHOMA CITY – United States Supreme Court Justice Sonia Sotomayor surprised some in the audience at Oklahoma City University recently with an answer to a question that had obviously surprised her.

Sharing the role of asking questions with OCU President Robert Henry, Law Dean Valerie Couch referred to a comment that Sotomayor once had made about Justice Kennedy. Sotomayor had observed that he was more willing to overturn precedents on the 1st Amendment because he is passionate in his belief that the 1st Amendment is fundamental to how democracy works.

Couch then asked Sotomayor about what might be an area of the Constitution in which she would be more likely to overturn precedent than the others because of a similar level of passion.

Oklahoma City bureaucrats smarter than Harvard?

BurningCrossIn 1928, the first Roman Catholic ever nominated for president, Gov. Al Smith of New York, came to campaign in Oklahoma at the height of the Ku Klux Klan’s power. Smith was greeted with numerous burning crosses during the night as his train rolled across the state. When Smith spoke to a rally in Oklahoma City, the KKK burned more crosses outside of the stadium where his campaign rally was held, inciting hatred and fomenting violence. Some of Smith’s relatives were listening to radio broadcasts of the proceedings and said they believed the atmosphere was so volatile that “they expected a bullet, expected to hear a gun go off.”

Smith then delivered what many consider to be the most courageous speech ever given by a presidential nominee. In it he said, “There is no greater mockery in the world today than the burning of the cross by these people who are spreading this propaganda …. (the symbol of) the Christ they are supposed to adore… . To inject bigotry, hatred, intolerance and un-American sectarian division into a campaign… . Nothing could be so contradictory of our whole history.”

Obama’s ship is sinking

BarackObamaMADThe New York Post carried a column by Michael Goodwin September 14 that is stunning.  While the entire piece is well written and recommended, the last few paragraphs should give every living soul in the world pause to consider America’s most failed president, the one who promised so very much and delivered… nothing. You know the one, so consistently ideological that he shows lazy in every other detail – living proof that the skills required to win elective office are not the same skill-set required to successfully accomplish the job.

Even for those with religious faith in President Barack Hussein Obama (the name he chose for swearing his oath of office), must admit Goodwin’s analysis is spot on.
