Oklahoma activist receives Human and Civil Rights Award
By Staff Report
Friday, 03 July 2009
ImageClara Luper, an Oklahoma City civil rights activist, author, and former high school history teacher, was presented with the National Education Association's Rosa Parks Memorial Award at the Association's annual Human and Civil Rights Awards Dinner in San Diego, Calif., July 2, 2009.

Luper began her fight for civil rights with a lunch counter sit-in at Oklahoma City's Katz Drug Store on August 19, 1958.  She helped organize the sit-in as an advisory to the Oklahoma City's NAACP Youth Council.

Denied service that first day, Luper and her team were not discouraged.  They returned the very next day.  This second attempt to integrate the Katz lunch counter just happened to coincide with the Kansas City based company's decision to integrate all its lunch counters in three states.

There is also a notice to customers that is shown in the lower-left corner and a security feature statement is displayed along the bottom border between two padlocks.

Authentic cashier's checks display the bank's logo in the top-center area.  A padlock icon and security feature statement are shown within the right border.

The statement "TWO SIGNATURES REQUIRED OVER $2,000.00" is displayed above the two signatures lines.

A call to wildfire victims: apply for FEMA aid
By Staff Reports
Thursday, 02 July 2009

Image Congressman Tom Cole is urging Oklahoma residents who sustained damages from April wildfires to apply for Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) aid.  Affected citizens in the following Fourth District counties may be eligible:  Carter, Cleveland, Grady, McClain, Murray, Oklahoma and Stephens.

"In April, a series of wildfires burned across the state," Congressman Cole said. "Our firefighters fought hard to help Oklahomans save their homes, but despite their efforts, damages were sustained.  The President has since issued a disaster declaration, and several counties in the Fourth District were included in the declaration.  Now those affected can apply for individual disaster aid.  I want to encourage those who sustained damages to their homes, property, and businesses to apply for this disaster aid."
