Democrats omitted much more

TheBlaze is reporting that the Republican Jewish Coalition (RJC) and GOP supporters are slamming the Democratic Party for omitting strong language against Hamas and the Palestinian “right of return” from its 2012 platform, language that was part of the 2008 Democratic platform.

This is yet another significant omission — and it was not later fixed — contrary to the party’s reinstating language referring to Jerusalem as Israel’s capital.

In 2008, the Democratic platform included the statement that Hamas – the group that rules Gaza and which the State Department defines as a terrorist group – must renounce terrorism. The platform then stated: "The United States and its Quartet partners should continue to isolate Hamas until it renounces terrorism, recognizes Israel’s right to exist, and abides by past agreements."

That language is now gone. In fact, the word “Hamas” doesn’t appear at all in the 2012 platform.

Also in 2008, the Democratic platform stated: "The creation of a Palestinian state through final status negotiations, together with an international compensation mechanism, should resolve the issue of Palestinian refugees by allowing them to settle there, rather than in Israel."

The Palestinian Authority under President Mahmoud Abbas and Hamas are demanding what they call a “right of return” for Palestinian refugees and all their descendants, that is, a whopping five million people moving into the territory that is today the State of Israel; however, less than 1% — only 30,000 Arabs — actually ever lived in Palestine before 1948 and are still alive today. If five million Palestinians move to Israel, the question is: Where are the Israelis expected to go? The “right of return” implicitly means a destruction of the Jewish state through demography. In 2008, the Democratic platform said the refugees should be settled in a Palestinian state, not in Israel. The 2012 platform is silent on this major point.

Mullet Over #524

Several years back (1972-1973) Carly Simon had a hit release entitled “You’re So Vain.” What many do not know is that Mick Jagger (yes, that Mick Jagger) sang backup on the song. Perhaps one can best hear Mick on the “don’t you.”

The Republic of Maldives is an island nation in the Indian Ocean. Many of the land areas therein are no more than 20 feet above sea level. Recently rising seas have caused major concerns. The Maldivian government has teamed with a Dutch architectural firm to take soil and sand from existing islands, then combining the mixture with concrete and polystyrene foam to create floating islands tethered to the seafloor by telescoping columns. The ingenious solution seems to be working as initial efforts with human-generated isles intended for general housing have been deemed “pleasingly successful.”

Butterflies display many beautiful colors on their wings, but the technique used to create the wealth of hues and patterns is fascinating.  Tones and tinges are not produced by simply mixing various pigments, but rather by utilizing assemblages of nanoscale shingles that reflect the sun’s light to produce a multitude of brilliant variations. A solitary flat scale might appear bland. However, when tilted and appropriately arranged in clusters, the effects can be both iridescent and dazzling.

Some objects that are large enough to be planets are labeled “free floaters” because they do not orbit any star. These strange worlds travel aimlessly through space at high speeds. NASA scientists estimate that there are likely billions of free floaters in our galaxy. I might add that scientists also estimate that our galaxy is of medium-small stature and that there are billions of other galaxies.

Some soda vending machines in Japan have built-in electronic games. If a customer is able to defeat a machine’s game, all monies are refunded and the drink is free.

Biologists claim that a polar bear can detect the odor of a seal from a distance of 20 miles.

The honey badger’s favorite food is (naturally) honey. The aggressive mammals tolerate the stings of thousands of bees in order to enjoy the sweet golden food.

Michigan newspaper after-Christmas headline: “Lansing Residents Encouraged to Drop Off Trees.”

The now ubiquitous hard hats were not commonly used on construction sites until 1933 while building the famous Hoover Dam. Well, be careful while dropping off trees – and I hope you have a magnificent week.

We remember

On Sept. 11, 2001, nearly 3,000 people were killed on America’s worst day of terrorism as 19 al-Qaida terrorists hijacked four passenger jetliners. Two planes smashed into New York’s World Trade Center, causing the twin towers to fall; one plowed into the Pentagon; and the fourth crashed into a field in western Pennsylvania.

On Tuesday night, two glorious beams of light will pierce the New York skyline where the Twin Towers used to be in remembrance of everyone who lost their lives on that fateful morning. It’s an occurrence that has become a staple on the anniversary.

Victims’ families and others will gather and grieve Tuesday at ground zero, the Pentagon and near Shanksville, Pa., for the first time after the emotional turning point of last year’s 10th anniversary.

U.S. Sen. Jim Inhofe (R-Okla.), a senior member of the Senate Armed Services Committee released the following statement commemorating the eleventh anniversary of the 9/11 attacks on the World Trade Center in New York and the Pentagon in Washington, D.C.:

“On this eleventh anniversary of that horribly catastrophic day in September, we honor and remember those who have been taken from us.  We give thanks for our military members who sacrifice so much.  We pray for those families who lost loved ones on that day and in the days since as our men and women in uniform have fought to defend this nation.  We have grateful hearts for victories we have achieved and the attacks that have been prevented, and we look with optimism to the future.  America must choose the best path forward as we remain steadfast and vigilant in doing what is best to protect our nation and our people.

“September 11, 2001 forever changed our nation.  The ashes of those evil acts gave rise to the unity, courage, strength and good will that makes America the greatest nation in the world.”
