Oilers Kelly Cup Playoff preview

OilersPlayoffTicketsThe last time the Tulsa Oilers lifted a championship trophy was 22 years ago. Just three years removed from a quarter century.

It’s hard for the younger generation of the current Oilers fans to fathom, but then again, some of the younger fans of the team were still in diapers back in the days of Mike Berger, Luc Beausoleil, and Tony Martino’s reign over the frozen floor of the Tulsa Convention Center, (now known as the Cox Business Center).

So it goes without saying that a championship for the Oilers is WAY overdue.

The Tulsa Oiler ended their first season in the ECHL with a 2-1 shootout win in Wichita and a 2-1 overtime loss in Quad City, and claimed the fourth and final playoff position in the ECHL’s Central Division, set to take on the Allen Americans beginning this Tuesday night at the Allen Event Center.

Both games were surprisingly tight, considering that the Wichita Thunder were playing for pride and the Quad City Mallards were playing for playoff seeding. Both games took more than the allotted 60 minutes to solve and were arguably two of the better games Tulsa played all season long.

WICHITA, KS—For the second straight year, the Tulsa Oilers are in the playoffs.

The Oilers traveled north to face their only remaining rival from the old Central Hockey League on Wednesday night as they came from behind to defeat the Wichita Thunder 4-2 in the InTrust Bank Arena. The win clinched the Oilers first ever trip to the ECHL’s Kelly Cup playoffs in their first year in the league. It was also the first time in 14 years that the Oilers have secured a playoff berth in two successive seasons, the last time being in 1999-2000 and 2000-2001.

Roughnecks searching for first win

Roughnecks15bTULSA, OK—The Tulsa Roughnecks have played three games in USL League play and they have yet to find the win column as they dropped their second and third home games to St. Louis FC and the Austin Aztex by identical scores of 2-0 in each game.

After an historic sellout draw on opening night with Oklahoma City, the Roughnecks have been taking plenty of shots, but none of them have been finding the back of the net. Last Thursday night Saint Louis FC invaded “Estadio De ONEOK” for a match that counted, (the other two were preseason “friendlies” or exhibitions), and partly on the strengths of former University of Tulsa goalkeeper Mark Pais, the STLFC handed the Roughnecks their first regular season loss.

TULSA, OK—The Tulsa Oilers took on the Missouri Mavericks in a pair of games to close out the home side of the regular season on Friday and Saturday night and the two different teams that made up the Oilers this season played in each game.

The team that showed fire and intensity came to play in Friday night and defeated the Mavs 6-4 on Friday night in front of a record crowd of nearly 13,000 fans, and the team that was defense optional and going through the motions were handed a well-deserved 5-3 loss on Saturday night. So it was a yin-yang weekend for the Demons on Denver.
