This Holiday season, tutors at East Church of God are overjoyed, overwhelmed, but thankful for their tutoring program for struggling elementary students. In its second year, the BRIGHT Tutoring program is off to a great start – lots of kids from kindergarten through the 5th grade. That success though welcome also brings challenge as program coordinator Angela Lawrence struggles to find additional committed tutors.
Each week, the program is welcoming more students. BRIGHT averages about 20 kids per week and would prefer to work one on one with the students; however, they are usually lucky to have 10 tutors each week, maybe less. Do you have a little time to volunteer?
BRIGHT tutors children of varying abilities – they have 1st graders who can read and 5th graders who can’t. As important as the actual education portion of this program, BRIGHT needs tutors to ‘connect’ with their student – demonstrating there is hope, assuring the youngsters that they are capable of learning, and proving with their personal testimony that there can be better life through education.
The Holiday Season can be extremely hectic, and Lawrence understands this." If you can’t do it every week, every other week – even once a month would be greatly appreciated and valuable" to these children says Lawrence.
"This is our plea for help. Even if you aren’t able to help, but know of someone else who may be interested, please forward this information," Lawrence added. In this season for giving, the gift of time and compassion to these children will be a gift that will last their whole lives.
