Tulsa Community College Instructor is selected as Mrs. Tulsa America 2010

Sasha Townsend, a Tulsa Community College math instructor and University of Tulsa graduate, recently was named Mrs. Tulsa America 2010 . She will represent Tulsa at the 2010 Mrs. Oklahoma America pageant on April 17, 2010, at the Guthrie Scottish Rite Temple in Guthrie.

Townsend is a committed advocate for families, and focuses on supporting children after divorce.

“As an adult child of divorce, I have seen firsthand the impact that divorce has on children and families,” she said in a prepared statement. “I want to use the title help couples strengthen their marriages and raise awareness of the needs of children after divorce. I also want to show young people that with hard work, their dreams are achievable. Family obstacles can be an opportunity to develop personal strength.”

Townsend served as Mrs. Oklahoma International 2008 and spoke to more than 1,400 people about supporting children and families in live presentations all over the state. She went on to place 4th runner-up at the Mrs. International competition.

“Mrs. International and Mrs. America are two different organizations with similar missions. Both pageant titles are about serving others and celebrating marriage, and both pageants encourage women to better themselves. However, Mrs. America is the only nationally televised pageant for married women and Mrs. Oklahoma America contestants compete in swimsuit competition.”

Townsend served as a volunteer marriage educator for the Oklahoma Marriage Initiative for the past three years and currently serves Tulsa families through Kendall Whittier, Inc., a local nonprofit that provides tutoring and mentoring to at-risk students in the neighborhood surrounding TU, as well as providing food to needy families and meeting other tangible community needs.

When she’s not volunteering or spending time with her family and friends, she can be found teaching college algebra, differential equations or calculus 2 at Tulsa Community College.

“I feel blessed to be able to teach and also to be able to give back,” Townsend said.

Contestants for the Mrs. Oklahoma America Pageant must be married and live in the city or county they represent. The winner will receive a prize package worth thousands of dollars and will go on to compete for the title of Mrs. America in Tuscon, AZ. The Mrs. America pageant is the only nationally televised pageant for married women in the country.

Sponsorship opportunities and pageant tickets are now available. Mrs. Tulsa is also available for interviews, appearances and service opportunities. Please call 918-805-0116 or email SashaMTownsend@gmail.com for more information.

“I would love to work with local organizations that support children and families and support my mission. With your help, and with or without the Mrs. Oklahoma crown, I will compete at state with no regrets and represent the Tulsa area with pride.”
