Oilers split weekend series with Mississippi.

Saturday night started poorly for Tulsa with RG Flath, Brennan Sarazin and Nathan Levanseque putting the puck behind Oilers goalie Trevor Cann in the first period, but Cann slammed the door shut and did not let another goal in. That paved the way for a string of 5 unanswered goals by Tulsa, beginning with a power play marker by Mike Beausoleil in the first period.altOT loss and big win solidify 2nd place for Tulsa, Costello’s streak stays alive.

It has been a crazy week for the Tulsa Oilers hockey club.

After having their game with the first place Allen Americans postponed by the record setting snowstorm that blanketed northeastern Oklahoma last week, The Oilers braved the elements, hitched up the dogies and headed to Mississippi to face the Riverkings in a two-game set this weekend.

Game one on Friday night featured a dominant performance by Tulsa, with Tom Dignard, Chad Costello, and Mike Beausoleil owning the middle frame of the game and giving the Oilers a 3-1 edge over the Kings going into the 3rd period. Mississippi rallied to tie the game at 3 each in the final period on goals by Brennan Sarazin and Nathun Lutz and wrapped the game in overtime with a Chris Auger goal with 48 seconds remaining before the shootout.

That was followed by goals by Evan Kotsopoulos and former Riverking Anthony Battaglia in the second period, and Jack Combs and a second goal by Mike Beausoliel in the third period. Chad Costello did not get a goal but he recorded three assists, which extended his string of at least a point per game to 16 games. Costello won the CHL player of the month for the performance of a point a game throughout the month of January…some 11 games…previously in the streak.

The Oilers got two points for the win on Saturday and one point for the overtime loss on Friday night. The combined 3 points bumped the Oilers up to an even fifty standings points and placed them two points ahead of the Bossier Shreveport Mudbugs going into next weekend. The Oilers have three big games coming up, a game in Allen against the American on Tuesday night that was postponed from February 1st , and two home games against Texas on the 11th and a rematch with Mississippi on next Saturday, February 12th.
