Freedmen meet in Tulsa

The Descendants of Freedmen Association and their supporters will host their next meeting on November 12, 2011 at the Rudisill Library, 1520 N Hartford, Tulsa, Oklahoma beginning at 1 pm.

Freedmen are descended from persons who were either free mixed African Indians or were enslaved by the 5 “Civilized tribes” (Cherokee, Creek, Seminole, Choctaw, and Chickasaw Indian nations). The tribes signed 1866 agreements with the US government that the freedmen would be granted citizenship in their tribal nations.  Today’s freedmen face constant threats from tribal government officials who have led movements to dis-enroll freedmen tribal members or block registration of freedmen tribal members and access to tribal services.

The meeting attendants will be updated about recent Oklahoma and Washington DC events which affect the freedmen.

The meeting is free and open to the public. For more information on the meeting and the organization, contact Mr or Mrs Lawrie: 918-587-6968 or Mrs Marilyn Vann 405-227-9810 or 405-818-5360 .  The Descendants of Freedmen Association website may be found at the following link: www.freedmen5tribes.com.
