German Unity celebrated: Blaskapelle at the Jazz Depot

JazzDepotBlaskapelleIt may be the best entertainment deal in or around the Brady District’s First Friday Art Crawl in October. Not only will the German-American Society of Tulsa’s Blaskapelle band be playing a free concert inside the Jazz Depot, but there’ll also be a dance instructor on hand to give lessons beginning an hour before the show – also at no cost whatsoever.

“For this gig, we’ve hired an instructor, and between six and seven she’ll be happy to teach couples to polka and waltz,” says Larry King, Blaskapelle’s manager and a trombonist in the band. “We’ve done that two or three times at the GAST [German-American Society of Tulsa] Center, and it’s been very successful. People really like it.

Wounded Warrior appreciation event

VeteranYoungDisabled1To honor and support Wounded Warriors, the Tulsa Elks Lodge #946 will host Wounded Warrior Battalion West Day of Appreciation on September 27, from 10:30 am to 6:30 pm. The Albert E. Schwab Chapter of the Tulsa Marine Corp League presents this fundraiser and invites the general public to come out and enjoy the day.

The event starts Saturday morning at 10:30am with the registration for the a motorcycle Poker Run with kick stands up at 11:30am. There will be five stops and then return to the Elks no later than 5 pm for the awards which immediately follow the ride.

The Great American Wheat Harvest film debut

WheatHarvestFilm1Documentary producer, Conrad Weaver of Emmitsburg, Maryland is bringing his film, The Great American Wheat Harvest to it’s Tulsa debut at the Circle Cinema on September 26. The film will be shown daily Sept 26 through Oct. 2.

Weaver produced the documentary over the past four years on a journey of more than 100,000 miles, including several areas of Oklahoma. “The Great American Wheat Harvest is a compelling story that few people know about. It’s a story about agriculture, and about the process of harvesting that helps get our food from the field to the table,” Weaver explains. The film is sponsored in part by the Oklahoma Wheat Commission and the Wheat Breeding program at OSU is featured in the film.

Eric Clapton tribute to JJ Cale

JJCaleClaptonBreezeEric Clapton has often said in public interviews that Tulsan JJ Cale is one of the single most important figures in rock history, a sentiment echoed by many of his fellow musicians. Cale’s influence on Clapton was profound, and his influence on many more of today’s artists cannot be overstated. To honor JJ’s legacy, a year after his passing, Clapton gathered a group of like-minded friends and musicians for Eric Clapton & Friends: The Breeze, An Appreciation of JJ Cale was released July 29, 2014. With performances by Clapton, Mark Knopfler, John Mayer, Willie Nelson, Tom Petty, Derek Trucks and Don White, the album features 16 beloved JJ Cale songs and is named for the 1972 single “Call Me The Breeze.”

Pray for Peace

RebaMcEntireCWOklahoma superstar Reba McEntire is featured on the Aug. 25 cover of Country Weekly magazine with a message of hope and togetherness and a new song, “Pray for Peace,” her first new music in two years.

Reba talks about the song, which was inspired by recent news events, in the Country Weekly cover story titled “A Gift from God.”

“What is happening in the world is really sad,” she tells the magazine. “I know it’s breaking God’s heart because it is making me cry, too. This song is a stirring message at a time when people need to hear it.”
