With only one win in their inaugural year in the American Athletic Conference, the University of Tulsa Golden Hurricane football team is not making much of a first impression.  Head Coach Bill Blankenship and his young team are looking to make a few strides to salvage their pride as they look to salvage some pride against the SMU Mustangs this Saturday in H.A. Chapman Stadium.

“It’s certainly not nearly as much fun.” Blankenship said at his weekly press conference, “We have a whole lot more fun when we’re rocking and rolling and winning those games. It’s a lot more of a challenge, but with more challenges comes great opportunity and we’re going to continue to stay in the fight. Somebody sent me a text the other day that said `The dead don’t bleed’, and we’re still bleeding.”

Senator Tom Coburn

A recent Washington Post article identified employee turnover and poor morale as challenges at the Department of Homeland Security that will prevent DHS from achieving its mission of securing the nation. Senator Tom Coburn (R-OK) reiterated his confidence in Homeland Security Secretary Jeh Johnson and urged patience in allowing the Secretary time to change the culture within the Department.

This from a politically-agenda-free retiring-senator more known for his criticism than support of government departments.

“Few members of Congress have raised more questions about the Department and its programs than I have,” commented Dr. Coburn, ranking member of the Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee. “But I have the utmost confidence in Secretary Jeh Johnson’s ability to lead and reform the Department. You cannot fix problems that have developed over many years overnight, and the Secretary deserves our patience as he works to change the culture at DHS.”

BOCA RATON, FL—It was a bad night for the Golden Hurricane. It took just eight minutes for Florida Atlantic to hang 17 points on TU in their first road trip of the 2014 season, and it was a deficit that they could not recoup as the Owls rolled to a 50-21 victory. It was the second straight loss for TU and the second week in a row that they allowed 50 points or more.

TU quarterback Dane Evans gave up two interceptions in the first half, one that was returned for a touchdown and another that killed a Golden Hurricane drive on the FAU four yard line.

TULSA, OK— There weren’t a lot of positives one could pull from the 52-7 loss the TU Golden Hurricane suffered at the hands of the fourth ranked Oklahoma Sooners on Saturday afternoon in H.A. Chapman Stadium on Saturday afternoon, but there were a few.

For one thing, the attendance was just 643 away from a full sellout at 29,357 on a wet and cool pre-fall afternoon, but that is tangential to a few facts about the game that will very likely go unnoticed due to the ridiculously lopsided number of points on the scoreboard.

Steve Russell, a retired U.S. Army officer who stressed his faith, military experience, and constitutional principles defeated Oklahoma Corporation Commissioner Patrice Douglas Tuesday to stand as the Republican candidate in the general election for Oklahoma’s 5th Congressional District.

Russell will face Democrat Al McAffrey in the November general election in his effort to succeed Rep. James Lankford in Congress. Most pundits give Russell the best odds to win as the the seat is expected to be retained by Republicans.
