Thursday night will be "round two -Tulsa" for alternative Country- Folk Artist Samantha Crain as she makes her way to the Cain’s Second Stage for the second time in less than four months. Samantha had her CD release party on May 28th for her new album “You (Understood)”which was released on June 8th, 2010.
Samantha is singer, songwriter and musician from Shawnee, Oklahoma who has recently gone solo from her band “The Midnight Shivers.” Because of this being an end of an era for her, part of the healing process of going it along came from changing her style just a bit. Even though Samantha Crain still has an Alt-Country sound, she is now also flirting with the Indie Rock genre with the addition of the electric guitar. In an interview with American Songwriter, Samantha was quoted saying; “Yeah. Before we did the record, I had been kind of messing around with electric guitar stuff at shows and just trying to get a feel for what people’s response to that was. I think most people would tell me after shows ‘I don’t get the electric guitar thing. Why are you playing electric guitar?’ I got a lot of comments. And so I knew in making this album people were either gonna really like it or they were just gonna like turn their backs and not like it at all”.
When Samantha was asked why she would continue with the electric guitar sound even with the responses not all being positive, she had this to say; “I think it was whenever the Midnight Shivers and I parted ways. I wasn’t ready for that to happen. It was really heartbreaking for me when all of that went down. I think for me it was either like I could do some electric guitar stuff, but more or less make another alt-country album, or I could completely kind of scare myself into something different. And I felt like that was the way to go, for me to start the healing process and getting on with a new phase in my music and in my life, too. Just ‘cause those guys were my bandmates and my best friends for three years. I knew that if I made this alt-country album that I would forever be trying to compare it with the album I would’ve made with them.”
Samantha’s twist on her new sound has really gone over very well. One bit of exciting news is that “Lions” from You (Understood) was recently featured in Episode 12 of Hung on HBO. Also, the Native American Music Award nominations were recently announced and “Songs in the Night” is up for five categories. They include: Artist of the Year, Debut Artist, Song/Single of the Year, Songwriter of the Year, and Record of the Year. Even though this nomination is not from her most recent work, it is still quite an accomplishment.
So come out this Thursday and support local artist Samantha Crain as she takes her solo journey with “You (Understood).”
