Talons sign Big 12 receiver

altTULSA, OK– The signing for the Tulsa Talons just keep coming. This time, they acquired a Baylor wideout with NFL experience.

The Tulsa Talons announced today former Baylor Wide Receiver Trent Shelton has signed to play with the Talons in 2011.

Shelton was a two-year fulltime starter at Baylor, but saw action all four seasons starting 7 games in his freshman and sophomore years combined.

Despite starting just 3 games as a redshirt-freshman, Shelton was Baylor’s 2nd leading receiver. As a sophomore, Shelton was the team’s 3rd leading receiver and had at least one reception in each game.

Shelton, is at or near the top of every Baylor all-time receiving record and was named to Baylor’s All-Decade team from 2000-09.

Shelton has spent parts of 3 seasons in the NFL signing out of college with the Indianapolis Colts in 2007, seeing time with the Seattle Seahawks in 2008 and most recently he was on the practice squad of the Washington Redskins during the 2009 season.

“Trent is a big time receiver who put up great numbers at Baylor and is another true NFL talent. When you watch him run routes, there is no question that his abilities are going to transfer over to the arena game very well. Along with a couple of other receivers we have this year, our receiving corps will again be a major strength of our team,” said Head Coach Mitch Allner.

Americans dump Oilers 5-3.

Two quick goals by Allen in the third period kills Oilers hopes for second home win.

TULSA, OK– The 3-8-1Tulsa Oilers returned to the confines of the amazing BOK Center after an 18 day hiatus on Thursday night to face the Allen Americans, the teams with the best record in the Central Hockey League at 11-2-0. The last time the Oilers graced the ice in their home arena they were schooled by the Wichita Thunder 8-0.

The road trip that sent the Oilers on a four game odyessy that began rather dramatically with a fire that consumed their chartered bus on November 5th and ended with a narrow defeat at the hands of the Rapid City Rush last Saturday night. In between the Oilers could only manage one single 4-3 shootout win against the Colorado Eagles.

Prior to the game Tulsa center Harrison Reed was recalled to the Lake Erie Monsters and they signed forward Chris Morehouse.

The Oilers got on the BOK big board first on an odd goal from Mike Beausoleil, Beausoleil shot the puck and after Allen goalie Adrian LeMay made the initial stop the puck deflected up in the air and landed behind the Americans goalie. Credit Dustin Hulak and Gary Steffes with assists.

The Americans responded at 13:43 on the power play as Bruce Graham found the back of the net behind Oilers goalie Tyler Sims, assisted by David Strathman.

The second period started with Tobias Whelan getting a power play goal at 1:21 assisted by Liam Huculak and Bruce Graham. Chad Costello of the Oilers responded nearly 5 minutes later with a goal at 6:27 assisted by Jack Combs and Derek Eastman. With 3:16 left in the period, the Americans Dustin Donaghy scored an even strength goal at 17:44 assisted by Tobias Whelan.

The end of the middle period featured the only fight of an otherwise incident free game when Chris Morehouse was shoved to the ice at 18:57 by Iain McPhee of the Americans. A scuffle ensued and Morehouse slammed McPhee to the ice.

Two quick goals by Allen started the third frame as David Strathman fired a rising wrist shot that deflected off the post and rattled around the perimeter of the goal cage behind Sims with only 21 seconds elapsed off the clock. At 1:27, Erik Adams scored the Americans  3rd power play goal in six opportunities.

The first professional goal by Oilers defenseman Brennan Barker closed the Oilers to within 2 goals of the Americans, but it was not enough as the Oilers fell to Allen 5-3.

In the end Oilers goalie Tyler Sims would stop 25 of 30 shots while his counterpart would save 26 of 29. In other action in the CHL tonight the Odessa Jackalopes defeated the Wichita Thunder 6-2 in Odessa and with the Jackalopes being the Oilers closest pursuers the Oilers are now in 9th place in the Berry Conference, dead last.

Jason Bonham’s Led Zeppelin Experience Rocked it out at the Spirit Bank Event Center

altIt was a very cold Wednesday night to go out to the Spirit Bank Event Center for the Jason Bonham – Led Zeppelin Experience (JBLZE), but that didn’t seem to bother most fans as people came out in droves. Once inside from the brutal wind, there were lines at will call, lines for buying tickets and lines for getting the tour t-shirts.  Fans of all ages filled the lobby in anticipation of the night’s events.

The lights went dim and the band came to the stage. As soon as Jason Bonham appeared, there was a warm welcome from the crowd as he waved his way over to his drum set.  Lead singer, James Dylan took the microphone and started the night off with “Rock and Roll.” Though it was a very good version of the song, with James not hitting the high notes that Robert Plant is known for, we thought we were in for a night of a good Led Zeppelin cover band with their own twists on the music. Obviously, this was just the warm up song; because once they started in with “Celebration Day”, the whole band seemed to transform into the original Led Zepp line up.

There was a brilliant light show on stage along with a 3-panel back-drop TV screen that played a lot of footage from Jason and John Bonhams early life among other hypnotic pictures and scenes. Jason, after a couple of songs would get up and talk a little about his father and Led Zeppelin, giving us not only great music to listen to, but also a little history lesson about the band and his relationship with his Dad.  When they showed footage of Jason having chubby cheeks as a boy, he said he still has them because he lives in the States now which caused much laughter.  Jason also told us that John Bonham, also known as Bonzo was a wonderful loving father and husband and joked how when he would get in trouble that his Dad would send him to his room(s); this also brought great amusement.

We were all Dazed and Confused with how well James Dylan seemed to be channeling Robert Plant; is that even possible to do when the person is still alive? The same could be said for lead guitarist, Tony Catania. He had Jimmy Pages’ mannerisms down to a tee. One concert goer, Anna Montgomery was so ecstatic over how well this show was going said “I have never been to an actual Led Zeppelin show, but if I close my eyes, it truly feels like now I have been to one.”  She was clearly blown away by the talent and the mirror image that JBLZE is to Led Zeppelin.

Jason Bonham was giving us more history at this point when he said in a rare interview with his Dad from 1970, that John Bonham mentioned he had a 4 yr old drummer; that someday they would play side by side together. Due to Bonham’s untimely death in 1980, they never had the chance to do this in person. But Jason said “Dad, here’s your chance”; and to that, Jason and John Bonham (John over the TV screen) simultaneously played "Moby Dick". It was so emotional and powerful that many across the room had tears streaming down their faces. It was a truly beautiful moment.

The entire band rocked out to every song. The whispering heard throughout the show by fans was nothing short of praise for JBLZE’s high standards of representing rock legends Led Zeppelin and the individuals within. Jason also told us that one of the biggest highlights of his life happened on September 12th, 2007 when he got to play drums for Led Zeppelin’s Reunion Concert held at the O2 Arena in London. He said “I got to be in Led Zeppelin for one night. One can only imagine the kind of high he must have been on after that. Jason also gave many thanks to his Mom and Grandmother Joan for sharing the video footage for the show; it wouldn’t have been the same without it.  If you did not make it to this show, I encourage you to find a stop on JBLZE’s tour dates and make a road trip out of it. You won’t be disappointed. For those that never got to see Led Zeppelin live, this is the closest thing you will ever see. ZBLZE, you have done Led Zeppelin and their fans proud.

Gretchen Wilson Shines at Osage

First off, let me start by apologizing for the delay in getting this posted.  As they say life happens, while you are making other plans.alt

The Redneck woman who shot to the top of the country charts just a few shorts years ago and became the owner of the highest debuting single for a female in country music history for "All Jacked Up"  brought her energetic and chameleon style show to the Osage Event Center last week and was the delight of a half packed house.

Gretchen Wilson, who is not really known for making your parents brand of country music, has managed to continue to re-invent herself and her brand of good time music and has turned it into her latest offering I Got Your Country Right Here.  She proclaims herself, "I think we made the first ever female southern rock album!"  And she put on a show to reflect just that.  Mixing country, rock, and blues, she shifted gears through her set that was fast and heavy laden with "drinkin’ songs."

She doesn’t call her shows concerts, but instead parties.  She comes out and lets her crowd know exactly what they are dealing with and unapologetically gives it her all for an hour and a half.  Taking time in between songs to drink beer and offer up a toast to America’s fighting man with a bottle of Jack Daniels, that she takes a long guzzle of.  Just by the looks of it most men couldn’t keep up with her when it comes to putting a few down.

Wilson has a very powerful voice and lets it ring out on the hits you would expect, "Here For The Party," "Homewrecker," and show closer "All Jacked Up."  As well as, taking time to slow things down and connect with her audience.  She is humble and approachable and does a very good job of just being one of the gang when onstage.  She did showcase some new songs off her latest album, which by the way is released on her very own recording label, Redneck Records.  The best of which was "I Got Your Country Right Here," an ode to southern rock that mentions her heroes by name.  She also played the hit, "Work Hard, Play Harder" which has become a bit of anthem among the blue collar folks that frequent her shows.

Gretchen also took the time to walk concert-goers down her past, from band to band and genre to genre.  She says, "I am country, but I do like to rock."  Then went on to play an amazing cover of the Foreigner classic, "Hot Blooded."  Then left the stage and allowed her band to work through several rocking hits, from "Barracuda" to "Smells Like Teen Spirit" to "Kashmir"  and beyond in a mash-up of classic rock songs the sounded spot on and took the atmosphere to another level complete with T-shirt launching guns and more whiskey drinking.

GW did two encores, the identifier to her career, "Redneck Woman" and the Zeppelin smash, "Rock and Roll."  She is a talented lady, and puts on a very good show.  The shame of it all is the her manly ways and political views, which I have purposely chosen not to go into, have probably caused her to be an outsider to her own industry, but with her own label and youth on her side she can "Make the music that she wants to make and her fans want to here!" as she boldly stated.

New poll: Oklahomans say ‘Lindsey’s Law’ should be enforced

School districts refusing to comply with Lindsey’s Law
are flying in the face of widespread popular support for enforcement of
the measure, according to a new public opinion survey from SoonerPoll.

A total of six public school districts have refused implementation of the Lindsey Nicole Henry Scholarships for Children with Disabilities Program Act. The new SoonerPoll results indicate Oklahomans disagree, by a 2-1 margin, with the school boards’ defiance of the new law.

The controversial law firm of Rosenstein Fist Ringold has advised districts not to implement the law,
even though the measure gained bipartisan legislative support and was
vetted before enactment by Schools Superintendent Sandy Garrett and
Governor Brad Henry.

Rosenstein Fist Ringold was previously involved in previous attempts to
impede operation of Oklahoma’s charter school laws. After years of
litigation in that matter, the firm and its clients lost, costing
taxpayers several hundred thousand dollars in legal fees.

Last month, Superintendent Garrett
told CapitolBeatOK that she believed members of the school boards in
question had violated their oaths of office when they voted to impede
implementation of the law.

The law written by state Rep. Jason Nelson of Oklahoma City and state Sen. Patrick Anderson of Enid — with key co-sponsors
including state Reps. Jabar Shumate and Anastasia Pittman — was named
in honor of Lindsey Nicole Henry, the daughter of the governor and his
wife, Kim, who died in infancy of a rare disease.

Shumate’s support of the legislation provoked an all-out effort by labor
unions, including the Oklahoma Education Association, to defeat the
black Democrat from north Tulsa in the July primary. Shumate survived the political assault and was reelected.

Lindsey’s Law allows students with special needs (a wide range of
disabilities) presently enrolled in public schools to access
scholarships if they enroll in a private school. Critics have questioned
the measure’s constitutionality. The measure did not increase funding
for special education, and operates within the framework of existing
finances.

According to a release from SoonerPoll, “When asked whether school
districts should comply with the law until a constitutional ruling is
made, 61.4 percent believe that they should compared to 29.5 percent who
believe that school districts are not obligated to comply until a
constitutional ruling is made.”

In all, the boards of education in five public school districts —
Owasso, Jenks, Union, Bixby and Broken Arrow – have chosen to defy the
law. A sixth district, the Tulsa public school system, voted to process a
few early applications but has turned away all other families seeking
to access the program.

The defiance of the law has drawn critical response from parents
of special needs children and from the bipartisan group of lawmakers
who shepherded the law through the Legislature, including income Speaker
of the House Kris Steele.

On Monday, an Owasso parent told a Tulsa television
station, “Now we need to think about suing the school board to make
them do what’s right. Because they’re choosing to violate the law they
don’t agree with. It makes no sense.”

When the legislation cleared the Legislature last spring, SoonerPoll
found 54.7 backed the measured. Today’s SoonerPoll analysis said the new
results means “one of two things; support for the legislation has grown
since its passage or many opposed to the bill believe it should be
complied with regardless of their opinions.”

In a statement sent to CapitolBeatOK, Bill Shapard, CEO of SoonerPoll,
said: “It is interesting to note that when the results are
cross-tabulated by party and political label no major statistical
differences are seen between Republicans and Democrats or liberals and
conservatives. It is remarkable to see such a controversial issue split
so evenly among political groups and ideologies.”

Doug Mann, the lawyer for both the Broken Arrow and Jenks public school
systems, has guided the school boards’ defiance of the new law.

The Oklahoma Council of Public Affairs commissioned the new survey from
SoonerPoll.com, which conducted its “scientific study using live
interviewers by telephone of 518 likely voters from Nov. 5 – 11. The
study has a margin of error of ± 4.3 percent.”
