Ok legislators file to defend drug regulation

In a bi-partisan show of support, 57 Oklahoma legislators yesterday filed a brief in the Oklahoma Supreme Court defending a state law regulating abortion-inducing drugs.

Last year, the Legislature approved House Bill 1970, which required Oklahoma physicians to administer such drugs in accordance with U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) guidelines.  At least 8 women are known to have died following use of abortion-inducing drugs in an off-label, unapproved manner.  No women have died from bacterial infection following FDA-approved administration of the drugs.

An out-of-state abortion advocacy group immediately challenged the law, and a District Court struck the regulations from state statutes.  The case is now before the Oklahoma Supreme Court.  The amicus curiae, or “friend of the court”, brief was filed in support of reversing the previous decision.

Sen. Greg Treat, co-author of HB 1970, said the law enacted critical protections for pregnant women and common-sense regulations for dangerous drugs.

“The regulations outlined in our legislation fall well within established judicial parameters, and the decision of the District Court represents an unfortunate departure from precedent,” said Treat, R-Oklahoma City.  “Sadly, the decision could eliminate critical protections for pregnant patients and their unborn children.  The District Court’s decision is reflective of an ongoing shift in liberal thinking on abortion.  No longer is it important that abortion be safe, rare and legal, but instead it is a right and a priority that must be asserted even above the health and well-being of pregnant patients.  This is a great shame, and we are hopeful the decision will soon be reversed.”

In addition to Sen. Treat and Rep. Randy Grau, principal authors of HB 1970, nearly 40 percent of the Legislature and the advocacy group Americans United for Life joined the amicus brief.  Rep. Grau, also an attorney, is representing the legislators in the Supreme Court.  The brief details evidence in support of regulating abortion-inducing drugs, and demonstrates that such regulations do not represent an undue burden on women seeking abortions.

The Legislators filing the Brief are:

Revolt of the Spooks

Weeks before the presidential election, President Barack Obama’s administration faces mounting opposition from within the ranks of U.S. intelligence agencies over what career officers say is a “cover up” of intelligence information about terrorism in North Africa.

The Washington Free Beacon is reporting that intelligence held back from senior officials and the public includes numerous classified reports revealing clear Iranian support for jihadists throughout the tumultuous North Africa and Middle East region, as well as notably widespread al Qaeda penetration into Egypt and Libya in the months before the deadly Sept. 11 terrorist attack on the U.S. consulate in Benghazi.

“The Iranian strategy is two-fold: upping the ante for the Obama administration’s economic sanctions against Iran and perceived cyber operations against Iran’s nuclear weapons program by conducting terror attacks on soft U.S. targets and cyber attacks against U.S. financial interests,” said one official, speaking confidentially.

The Iranian effort also seeks to take the international community’s spotlight off Iran’s support for its Syrian ally.

Two House Republicans, Reps. Darrell Issa (R., Calif.) and Jason Chaffetz (R., Utah), stated in a letter sent this week to Secretary of State Hillary Clinton that officials “with direct knowledge of events in Libya” revealed that the Benghazi attack was part of a string of terror attacks and not a spontaneous uprising against an anti-Muslim video produced in the U.S. The lawmakers have scheduled congressional hearings for Oct. 10.

Obama.com owned by bundler with ties to Chinese Gov

Government Accountability Institute (GAI) President Peter Schweizer released a new 108-page GAI investigation into the threat of foreign and fraudulent Internet donations in U.S. federal elections.

Breitbart News obtained an advance copy of the bombshell report which reveals that the Obama.com website is not owned by the president’s campaign but rather by Obama bundler Robert Roche, a U.S. citizen living in Shanghai, China. Roche is the chairman of a Chinese infomercial company, Acorn International, with ties to state-controlled banks that allow it to “gain revenue through credit card transactions with Chinese banks.”

There’s more.

The unusual Obama.com website redirects traffic directly to a donation page on the Obama campaign’s official website, my.barackobama.com, which does not require donors to enter their credit card security code (known as the CVV code), thereby increasing the likelihood of foreign or fraudulent donations. The website is managed by a small web development firm, Wicked Global, in Maine. One of Wicked Global’s employees, Greg Dorr, lists on his LinkedIn page his additional employment with Peace Action Maine and Maine Voices for Palestinian Rights. According to the GAI report, 68 percent of all Internet traffic to Obama.com comes from foreign visitors.

And still more.

In 2011, Mr. Roche obtained one of the most sought-after pieces of real estate in Washington, DC: a seat at the head table for President Obama’s State Dinner for Chinese President Hu Jintao. How Roche—a man whose infomercial company hawks fitness equipment, cell phones, and breast enhancement products—landed a seat alongside Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, former President Bill Clinton, Sen. John Kerry, former President Jimmy Carter, and Chinese President Hu Jintao remains unclear.

Since 2009, White House Visitor Logs list the name Robert Roche at least 19 times, despite the fact Mr. Roche’s primary residence is in China.

Mr. Roche, who is originally from Chicago, is a co-chair of the Technology Initiative for the Obama campaign.

Scott Pruitt’s growing influence

The Oklahoman’s Randy Ellis has an interview available on newsok.com today on how Oklahoma’s Attorney General Scott Pruitt is gaining a national reputation.

Scott Pruitt said fighting to make sure federal officials don’t exceed their constitutional authority may be the most important role he plays as Oklahoma’s attorney general.

Oklahoma Attorney General Scott Pruitt says fighting to make sure federal officials don’t exceed their constitutional authority may be the most important role he plays as Oklahoma’s attorney general.

Elected as just the second Republican attorney general in state history in November 2010, Pruitt has quickly gained a national reputation for his Don Quixote-like advocacy of federalism and relentless efforts to challenge any federal law or action that he sees as an infringement on individual liberties or states’ rights.

Pruitt sat down with a reporter from The Oklahoman recently to discuss why he has chosen to devote so much of his time and office’s resources to combating new federal laws and administrative actions.

The former state senator insists it’s not a matter of partisan politics.

“It’s all about making sure the enumerated powers — the limited powers that are vested in the federal government — are there. And if there is an expansion or overreach beyond that, the states step in,” Pruitt said. “That’s exactly the role, I would say, of the modern-day AG.”
