Scotch Egg contest planned at Baker Street

Tulsa will crown its Scotch Egg Eating Champion on Saturday, August 11 when Baker Street Pub & Grill (6620 South Memorial Drive) hosts its first-ever Scotch Egg eating contest and silent auction.

The contest, sponsored by Guinness, begins at 6 p.m. and proceeds from the silent auction benefit the Myasthenia Gravis Foundation of America, the only national volunteer health agency dedicated to the fight against this incurable neuromuscular disorder.

Twenty participants will have 12 minutes to eat seven Scotch Eggs topped with Coleman’s Mustard.  The participant who finishes their eggs first will earn a cash prize of $250.  There is no entry fee to participate in the contest. Contestants must be 21 or older.

A British pub favorite, Scotch Eggs consist of a hard-boiled egg encased in pork, coated in breadcrumbs and deep fried.

Silent auction items include a trip to Kansas City for a Kansas City Royals’ baseball game; a trip to Dallas for the Red Bull Soapbox Derby; tickets to an upcoming event at Tulsa’s BOK Center and more.

To enter, pick up a registration form at Baker Street Pub & Grill, 6620 South Memorial Drive.  Or, click here to reach their Facebook page.  For those that have never enjoyed Scotch Eggs, see photo to the right provided by Anna Drake.

Tulsa Today last wrote about Baker Street during the royal wedding where, even if you did not get an invitation to attend in person, you could still be part of William and Kate’s special day.  That Friday, April 29, Baker Street served brunch and Bloody Mary’s at 5 am as royal watchers prepared to witness and share the fun festivities.

As an added bonus, Baker Street awarded couples named William and Kate with a $25 gift card to the pub and a crown and tiara set.  Even though our intrepid reporter did not awaken at that hour to cover the event, we heard it was great fun. Yes, this is one of our favorite watering spots on South Memorial – good service, moderate prices, quality food, fun crowd.  See you there.

Gov. Fallin named Vice Chair

Oklahoma Governor Mary Fallin was named vice chair of the National Governors Association (NGA) during the closing session of the annual NGA meeting in Williamsburg, Virginia on Sunday.

Fallin previously served on the NGA Executive Committee. Delaware Gov. Jack Markell was named NGA chairman. Fallin is a Republican and Markell is a Democrat; the chair and vice-chair rotate political parties each year.

Fallin is the first NGA vice chair from Oklahoma and the first Republican woman to serve as vice chair. She is the third woman of either party to hold the position.

“I’m honored to have been selected by my peers to serve as NGA vice chair.  It’s not only a privilege for me personally, it’s also a welcome acknowledgement of the legislative successes we’ve made in Oklahoma and the state’s continued economic growth and forward progress,” Fallin said.  “The NGA is a well-respected and trusted source of innovative public policy solutions for our nation’s governors.  I’m excited by the opportunity to serve and eager to share the great ideas and policies of the Sooner State with the rest of the NGA.”

The NGA was founded in 1908. Its members are the governors of the states, territories and commonwealths. Among the services the NGA provides to governors is representing states on Capitol Hill and developing innovative solutions to public policy challenges through the NGA Center for Best Practices.

The NGA is governed by a nine-member Executive Committee elected by all governors in attendance at their Annual Meeting. The NGA chair and vice chair are voting members of the Executive Committee.

The chair, in consultation with the vice chair, makes all committee and task force assignments.

Led by the chair and vice chair, governors set the association’s priorities and determine its activities.

The Vice Chair also is the chair of the NGA Center for Best Practices Board.

As the spouse of the NGA vice chair, Oklahoma First Gentleman Wade Christensen will now serve as the vice chair of the NGA Spouses’ Leadership Committee.

Survivor cities flourish in thrift

Some cities in California go bankrupt while others prosper.  Stockton, San Bernardino, Mammoth Lakes, and Valleho have all gone bankrupt in recent weeks, West Sacramento, according to its mayor, Christopher Cabaldon is surviving. Cabaldon tweeted: “4th CA city just voted to declare bankruptcy tonight, if you’re in West Sacramento worry not…our city is in solid fiscal shape.”

Cabaldon says the West Sacramento government has been cut 25 percent
over the past 4 years, boasting, “We have, in West Sacramento, been
making reductions, putting our fiscal house in order so we can make sure
that our citizens will be protected.”

Rancho Cordova, 14 miles from West Sacramento, is not only surviving, but doing very well indeed; it has enjoyed eight straight years of surplus. Rancho Cordova City Manager Ted Gaebel said:

“We don’t just pass a budget and hope things turn out ok in the hand, we manage a budget on a day to day basis. If that means cutting several million dollars during the year is what I need to do.”

Bankruptcy experts have said that cities are being bankrupted by weak property- and sales-tax revenues as their pension obligations keep growing. Stockton couldn’t agree with its employee unions and creditors on a plan to close a $26 million gap in its general fund. San Bernardino’s obligation to its employee retirement system doubled from 2007 to 2012. Pension spending grew an average of 11.4 percent a year in California’s biggest cities between 1999 and 2010, almost twice as fast as spending on public safety, social services, recreation, health and sanitation.

FBI: No racist motive in Trayvon Martin killing

According to newly released evidence from the FBI, there appears to be no racial motivation in George Zimmerman’s killing of Trayvon Martin.

As NBC Miami reports:
The FBI found no racial bias behind George Zimmerman’s shooting of Miami Gardens teen Trayvon Martin, according to dozens of documents related to the case released Thursday.

Chris Serino, the lead investigator in the case, told the FBI that while Zimmerman was “overzealous” and had a “little hero complex,” but was not racist. Co-workers, neighbors, and friends of Zimmerman said he did not have any racial bias. Nonetheless, the DOJ investigation into the killing as a hate crime is still open, no doubt in large part to the initial media bias that turned the Trayvon killing into a national story.

The documents also show a political motivation at work in the Trayvon arrest. Sanford Police Sgt. Arthur Barns said the black community “would be in an ‘uproar’ if ZIMMERMAN is not charged. The community will be satisfied if an arrest takes place. As for the civil rights investigation, it is determined to be a violation of Trayvon Martin’s civil rights then it will reflect negatively on the Sanford Police Department and fingers will be pointed at them for not doing their job properly.”

Tulsa Today has noticed a significant lack of national media coverage of this FBI report.  However, on news web sites with more independent thinking like www.Breitbart.com where we first found this report, readers are posting comments significant in support for George Zimmerman including links to his defense fund:
