AG Pruitt to testify on EPA

Oklahoma Attorney General Scott Pruitt will testify this morning before a Congressional committee to discuss recent actions by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, including questionable practices surrounding regional haze lawsuits in multiple states.

The testimony will be at 8 a.m. CDT in front of the Subcommittee on Technology, Information Policy, Intergovernmental Relations and Procurement Reform of the House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform. U.S. Rep. James Lankford, R-OK, serves as chairman of the subcommittee.

“This is an opportunity for us to talk directly to Congress about the challenges facing Oklahomans because of improper actions by the EPA, specifically in dealing with regional haze,” Pruitt said. “Under the Clean Air Act, Oklahoma stakeholders have the authority to create an Oklahoma solution for non-health related issues like regional haze.”

Pruitt will address the state’s lawsuit against the EPA and the decision this month by the 10th Circuit Court of Appeals to stay the EPA’s federal plan.

“I look forward to discussing with committee members the 10th Circuit’s recent decision that temporarily prevents the EPA from implementing its overreaching federal plan. If the plan is allowed to move forward, utility rates in Oklahoma will rise as much as 20 percent over 3 years and the economic harm to the state and its citizens would be irreparable.”

Given the Supreme Court announcement expected today on Obamacare and the House of Representatives vote on Attorney General Eric Holder, Pruitt should have a busy and very interesting day.

Jim Bridenstine wins nomination

Updated: Jim Bridenstine won the Republican nomination to the First Congressional District of Oklahoma with 54 percent of the vote Tuesday in a hotly contested battle with five-term incumbent John Sullivan.

In an exclusive Tulsa Today interview this morning Bridenstine said, “As is true in American politics these days, this was a close election that we only won by a few percentage points which was significant, but the incumbent gathered 46 percent of the vote.  A lot of voters went different directions.”

Bridinstine said, “John Sullivan has represented Oklahoma honorably.  I don’t know what went into everyone’s decision, but there is a growing sentiment across the country that America needs new leadership.  Democrats and Republicans have both been spending recklessly and people are looking for leaders that are willing to get the budget under control.  We must solve the fiscal monetary crisis so we can get the economy growing again.

“The interests of the 1st District cannot be separated from those of our nation as a whole.  Congressmen who seek earmarks, tax preferences, bailouts and subsidized ‘job creation’ within their districts using federal money do so at the cost of similar deals for every Congressman’s District.  We’re creating money out of thin air to fund massive federal deficits.  We must achieve a balanced budget and stop destroying the value of the U.S. dollar, so that capital will once again be attracted to the United States.  I hope to put in place a simple, understandable tax system.  We need to restore reason and predictability to federal laws and regulations so that individuals and companies can confidently plan and invest in America and in Oklahoma’s 1st District,” Bridenstine added.

Bridenstine, 37, is a lieutenant commander in the Naval Reserve.  He is a graduate of Jenks High School and earned a triple major from Rice University and an MBA from Cornell University.  He was also executive director of the Tulsa Air and Space Museum.  He is married to Michelle (Ivory) Bridenstine and the couple has three children Walker (5), Sarah (3), and they expect another child in February.  The family attends South Tulsa Baptist Church.

“America’s national security crisis is the deficit,” Bridenstine said.  “We have to get that under control to build a prosperous future and maintain a strong national security.  Today, America is cutting national security funding because of the deficit crisis and that is also hurting our economy.

“As many are aware, the so-called Super Committee to address the budget deficit set up automatic cuts to the defense department that were meant to be so draconian and unpalatable-for-most that they were not expected to go into force, but they are happening as a result of Congressional cowardice to cut spending elsewhere,” Bridenstine said.

When asked about the Congressional investigation of the failed “Fast and Furious” program of Attorney General Eric Holder, Bridenstine said, “I believe it is perfectly appropriate for the House of Representatives to investigate Holder on that issue.   That investigation is a process that will have to play out and I have not been involved, but I am following the latest events as they develop.

When asked about Health Care reform Bridenstine said, “Obamacare should be repealed.  The Supreme Court should rule it unconstitutional because the individual mandate is unconstitutional.  Regardless, it should be set aside because it will break the budget which is already an economic disaster.”

“There are a great many folks that have benefit plans from their employers and, should they become eligible for Obamacare, their employers will drop them from those private plans which will put an even greater burden on the taxpayer.  I am fairly confident the Supreme Court will reject the entire bill because everything hinges on the individual mandate,” Bridenstine said.

“The objective of health care reform is a financially sustainable effort that guarantees health care decisions are made between patients and doctors, not by federal bureaucrats,” Bridenstine added.

“I’m running for Congress because our nation is in a state of extreme crisis jeopardizing the future of our children and grandchildren.  Multiple Congresses and Administrations, Democrat and Republican, have made irresponsible, politically motivated decisions that will burden future generations of Americans with unprecedented debt, diminished economic opportunity and reduced national security.  By failing to respect the U.S. Constitution, we have embarked on a path toward diminished freedom and liberty.

In summary Bridenstine said, "My priorities are fundamental.  We must: 1.) Get the economy back on track by controlling spending, 2.) Get national defense back on track because the world is not getting any safer."

The general election will be held November 6.  Democrat John Olson and Independent Craig Allen are also qualified on the ballot.

Carter slams Obama

You should read former-President Jimmy Carter’s latest Op-Ed.  While the president’s detractors have long drawn unflattering parallels between Jimmy Carter‘s presidency and Barack Obama’s, it seems even Carter is starting to distance himself from the president.

In a Sunday New York Times article titled “A Cruel and Unusual Record,” Carter blasts the administration‘s foreign policy decisions and the implications for the United States’ “moral authority” around the world.

He wrote:   "Revelations that top officials are targeting people to be assassinated abroad, including American citizens, are only the most recent, disturbing proof of how far our nation’s violation of human rights has extended…."

Oklahoma City’s Catholic archbishop calls for religious freedom, protection of churches from controversial HHS mandate

OKLAHOMA CITY – The Catholic Cathedral of Our Lady of Perpetual Help was filled for the Eucharistic Celebration marking the start of the “Fortnight for Freedom” in the Archdiocese of Oklahoma City.

Archbishop Paul S. Coakley was principal celebrant for the Friday evening Mass, held in conjunction with the memorial feasts of two English Church martyrs and saints, Thomas More and John Fisher.

Coakley delivered the Homily for the event, saying it gladdened him to see the Cathedral packed with worshipers for a week night, evening service.

Coakley focused his remarks on the Scriptural readings for the evening, 1 Peter 4:12-19 (NAB Revised) — in which Christians are encouraged to “Rejoice to the extent that you share in the sufferings of Christ” – and Matthew Chapter 10: 34-39, the provocative narrative in which Jesus warns his followers, “I have come to bring not peace, but the sufferings of the sword.”

Coakley said the two challenging readings “are the light of truth,” illustrating contemporary “divisions in our own hearts, in our communities, our nation.” He pointed to the executions of Fisher and More as injustices, and praised their heroic decisions to follow God rather than culture. The pair opposed King Henry VIII’s establishment of the Church of England.

Coakley praised them as men who refused to compromise their conscience, recalling the final words of More, who had served as King Henry’s Chancellor: “I die the King’s good subject, but God’s subject first.”

Coakley said the Catholic Church in the United States and other faith communities now face “an unimaginable situation” – as a federal Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) mandate has been promulgated to require church-affiliated institutions to provide health insurance coverage to include abortafacients and other practices contrary to long-established doctrines, teachings and practices.

Coakley characterized the mandate as “unconscionable interference in religious ministry.”

He stressed his view that the controversy is “not about contraception, it is about religious freedom.” Coakley also emphasized his view that “This is not a Catholic issue, it is an American issue.” He continued, “Religious freedom is not a right doled out to us by the largesse of our government, but given to us by God.”

He expressed gratitude to a wide range of non-Catholic Christian leaders who have joined Catholics in opposing the HHS mandate, and encouraged attendees at the Mass to participate in the Rally for Religious Freedom on Saturday (June 23). U.S. Rep. James Lankford of Oklahoma City, a Republican and a Baptist, spoke at that rally, introducing state Rep. Rebecca Hamilton, a Democrat and a Catholic.

At Friday’s service, the Cathedral Choir led congregational singing of “Faith of Our Fathers” and “You Call to Us, Jesus.” The pair of hymns were filled with imagery of sacrifice and surrender of worldly things as part of the Christian walk.

Joining Archbishop Coakley in the Liturgy were 24 priests, including Our Lady’s pastor, Rev. John Metzinger, 17 ordained deacons, men and women with the Knights of the Holy Sepulchre, and an honor guard of 10 uniformed members of the Knights of Columbus. Parishioners estimated attendance at the liturgy at more than 700 people.
