Players Tribute to Leon Russell announced

leonrusselltribute2Exclusive Breaking News: It’s good to know that wisdom, grace and generosity are contagious.

At Leon Russell’s Memorial Service, Jimmy “Junior” Markham and Larry Shaeffer came up with the idea of presenting “Tribute to Leon Russell” as a one night musical event. Strictly not for profit, it is offered as a musical homage to Tulsa’s most prolific musician.

Shaeffer said “With the possible exception of Bob Wills, no one has done more for Tulsa music than Leon. He was our rock star.”

Markham was with Leon in the beginning, playing dives and parties around Tulsa before Oklahoma even had any liquor laws; so it wasn’t illegal for teenagers to be playing in bars.

Winterfest opens this weekend

winterfest16aBundle up and enjoy the spirit of the holidays as Tulsa’s favorite holiday celebration returns to the streets of downtown Tulsa this weekend with events for the whole family.

Arvest Winterfest kicks-off the holidays on Friday, Nov. 25 with the Turkey Trot presented by Fleet Feet Tulsa. The race begins at 8:30 a.m. and ice skating begins at 10 a.m.

Billy Joel returns to BOK Center

billyjoel16aLegendary singer-songwriter Billy Joel returned to Tulsa for the first time since 2009, thrilling a receptive audience packed inside the BOK Center. Back then he was touring with Elton John during their highly successful Face 2 Face tour.  On this night however, it was all Joel, performing solo here for the first time in nearly 30 years.

Opening his set with “Miami 2017 (Seen The Lights Go Out On Broadway)” Joel skillfully took the audience on a musical journey literally from A-Z through his vast catalog of hits, from “Allentown” to “Zanzibar.”  He even dusted off “The Ballad of Billy The Kid” from his 1973 album “Piano Man.”  When the song ended Joel explained to the crowd how it was factually, geographically and historically inaccurate, joking that at that point in his career he had never traveled further west than New York.

Leon Russell’s family has graciously provided an opportunity for Tulsans to say one last goodbye to the legionary master musician this Sunday at the Mabee Center, 7777 S. Lewis Ave. Doors open at 1 p.m. service begins at 2 p.m.

Russell’s former recording home, Church Studios, has spontaneously become a site for personal expression of remembrances as people continue to leave flowers and notes in chalk on the steps. The official  memorial posted by the family with significant historic performance videos follow.

Leon Russell remembrance

leonrussellAnother Tulsa music master has passed. Leon Russell now plays in space and time beyond this world, but he will forever play in our memories. He was loved worldwide for his music and many credit careers to him, but in Tulsa, he loved and was loved as a friend and you can hear it in his musical tribute to Oklahoma which is the best state rock song ever written below.
