More die from selfies than sharks

Selfie1In an odd story with serious safety concerns, Mashable.com reports that a 66-year-old Japanese tourist has died, and his travel companion has been injured, after falling down stairs while attempting to take a selfie at the Taj Mahal.

The man’s death raises the selfie-related death toll this year to 12. To put that in perspective, in 2015 there have, so far, been eight deaths caused by shark attacks.

It sounds like a joke, but unfortunately it isn’t: The deaths are a tragic reminder to travelers that focusing on a phone screen instead of unfamiliar surroundings is not safe.

Largest car show in the metro – FREE

CarShow2Don’t miss the South Tulsa Baptist Church Car Show Sunday, September 20 from 4:00 to 6:30 p.m. It is a free family event and the largest annual car show in the Tulsa area. Just to be clear – we said it is FREE.

Sponsored by the South Tulsa Baptist Church; organizers expect over 600 show cars and 3,000 in attendance. Congressman Jim Bridenstine will officially open the show at 4:00 p.m. followed by a flag salute and the National Anthem. Miss Oklahoma, Georgia Frazier will be signing autographs in the church Commons area.

Blues Challenge at Cain’s Ballroom

CainsBluesChallengeNine bands will compete September 5th at the historic Cain’s Ballroom for the right to represent Tulsa and Northeastern Oklahoma at the International Blues Challenge next January in Memphis, TN.

The Blues Society of Tulsa will hold its 12th Annual Blues Challenge at Cain’s, 423 N. Main, with the doors opening at 4:30 p.m. and the first act taking the stage at 5:30 p.m. Each act will perform 20 minutes, with a 15 minute break between sets.

This year’s show promises to be one of the most exciting and competitive yet,“ said Bill Martin, Blues Society president. “We have a mixture of six acts competing for the first time, with three others making repeat performances.

Starlight Band date change and movie night

StarlightConcertSmTulsa, OK—Due to the forecast of inclement weather, Starlight Band has announced that its show scheduled for Tuesday, July 7 at Guthrie Green has been moved to Monday, July 20.

The concert’s theme is “Way Out West” and will feature Jeffrey Smith on fiddle. The free performance will begin at 8pm at Guthrie Green, 111 E. Brady Street, in Tulsa.

On Tuesday, July 14, movie music will be the star of the show at Starlight’s free concert “Night at the Movies.” The performance begins at 8pm at Guthrie Green. “We’re playing some alltime favorite movie themes, including ‘Jurassic Park’, ‘Les Miserables’, ‘Star Wars’ and ‘Annie,’” said Artistic Director L. Dale Barnett. After intermission, a silent short movie will be screened accompanied by live theater organ music. The audience will enjoy the hijinks of Laurel and Hardy as two escaped convicts in “Liberty.”
