Floating city gathering momentum

There’s only a couple of hitches – it’s not built yet, and it’s going to look a lot like a multi-story parking garage when it is, but the designers have released computer animation of what they hope the mile-long vessel will look like in a story posted by The United Kingdom’s Mail Online.

aliensCartoonA recent survey indicates that 41% of adult Americans believe that extra-terrestrials have visited earth and that these aliens are likely “similar to us.” If similar to me, these poor creatures may have bald heads, large stomachs and sizable credit card debts.

In 1920, a Detroit policeman (William Potts) assigned to vehicle traffic management constructed an electronic light device that enabled him to control three separate street intersections from one location. He selected the colors red, yellow and green because local railroads already used those hues for lantern lenses. Potts had invented the world’s first light system to be used for controlling automobile traffic.

There are likely “tens of billions” of Earth-like planets in our Milky Way galaxy, according to a study released Monday by astronomers from the University of California-Berkeley and the University of Hawaii.

“Planets like our Earth are relatively common throughout the Milky Way galaxy,” said astronomer Andrew Howard of the University of Hawaii, who gives an estimate of about 40 billion.

Fallin appoints former House Speaker Chris Benge Secretary of State

OKLAHOMA CITY – Governor Mary Fallin announced today that former Oklahoma House Speaker Chris Benge will be appointed secretary of state. He will begin serving on Nov. 8, 2013.

Benge replaces Larry Parman, whom the governor has appointed to serve as the director of the Oklahoma Department of Commerce (ODOC) and on her Cabinet as secretary of commerce. Parman will continue to serve as secretary of state through Nov. 7 and will start his new duties on Nov. 8.

As secretary of state, Benge will serve as a senior adviser to the governor on policy, economic and legislative issues. The appointment requires the confirmation of the Oklahoma Senate.

BillPicketThe son of former slaves, one Bill Pickett repeatedly performed a rodeo feat that has supposedly never been duplicated. Bill was born in 1870 in Williamson County, Texas. While still in his teens, Pickett developed a technique for flipping cows, steers and even bulls by grabbing an animal by its ears and clamping down with his teeth on the bovine’s upper lip. It was amazing to watch as the beasts would tumble head-over-heels. Ovations were thunderous. In the early 20th century, Mr. Pickett became a rodeo superstar, performing in front of crowds as large as 60,000.

In Italy, it is common to answer a telephone by saying “pronto” which roughly translates to “I am ready.”
