Legendary performers The Charlie Daniels Band will perform at the Event Center at River Spirit on Friday, November 1.

Theatre Tulsa launches 91st season

TheaterTulsa91Theatre Tulsa has announced its annual kickoff of its new season, with a party for theatre fans, a hit musical and a special opening night.

The long-lasting theatre, now in its 91st season, will open with a kickoff party for fans and supporters Sept. 12 from 5:30-7:30 at Girouard Vines in downtown Tulsa.

“This is our annual party for the local theatre community. Our subscribers, donors, volunteers and fellow theatre people are all invited to celebrate the start of another exciting season,” said Sara Phoenix, artistic director of Theatre Tulsa.

Branson Fiddle Festival success

FiddleFestBranson has named its Mid-America Fiddler’s Championship winners at the 25th Annual Downtown Branson Fiddle Festival.  And the winners are:

Grand Champion Tom Weisgerber from St. Peter, Minnesota.  Tom also won First Place in the Open Division.  Other competition winners were Marty Elmore of Bowie, Texas for the Adult Division, Wayne Head of Hugo, Oklahoma for the Senior Division, Anthony Mature of Huntsville, Texas for the Accompanist Division, River Lee of The Woodlands, Texas for the Junior Division, and Tanner Marriott of Ava, Missouri for the Pee Wee Division.

Norman music festival announces

Norman Music FestivalThe Norman Music Festival is preparing to rock the streets April 24, 25 and 26, 2014 for the seventh annual epic event promoters announce.

For six years the festival has provided Norman with the fuel to fire up the Oklahoma music scene and creates a buzz around local and statewide artists.

Remembering Johnny “JJ” Cale

JJCale1The most significant musical talent in Oklahoma history, JJ Cale died at 8 p.m. Friday July 26, 2013 at Scripps Hospital in La Jolla, California.  Born in Oklahoma City on Dec. 5, 1938, Cale grew up in Tulsa and graduated from Tulsa Central High School in 1956.

Johnny Cale saw himself primarily as a guitarist in the beginning. He sat at home listening to records figuring out difficult guitar licks and doing what you have to do to play an instrument – practice.  You play those patterns over and over and over until you’re sick of them and then your fingers start remembering on their own.

Gene Crose is credited with coaxing a reluctant Cale onto a stage. Cale didn’t think he was ready, but Crose had an ear for talent – little did he know what he would set in motion.
