TMM forum: faithful response to “gun violence”

The Tulsa Metropolitan Ministry in a recent press release declares that “gun violence” is a catalyst for conversation – a contradiction as guns cannot be violent – guns are inanimate.

The stated goal is to “have a conversation take place through the minds of faithful people, who may well have different opinions on gun control, or gun rights or reasons for so much gun violence, but who wish to bring HOPE to the destruction and despair that is caused by gun violence.

Mike Bennett / NSU Jazz Sunday at Jazz Depot

This Sunday, Tulsa’s Jazz Depot will feature renowned local trumpeter Mike Bennett with the NSU Jazz Ensemble.

As director of jazz studies at Tahlequah’s Northeastern State University and a noted professional jazz saxophonist, Dr. Tommy Poole has been able to bring in guest artists from all over the country to perform with and instruct the students in his NSU Jazz Ensemble.  With trumpeter Mike Bennett, however, he gets something the out-of-towners can’t give.

Beach Boys at River Spirit

The signature California sound of the Beach Boys will be rockin’ the Event Center at River Spirit Friday, May 17 and Saturday, May 18.

The Beach Boys are regarded by many as an important catalyst in the evolution of popular music. The band is known for their vocal harmonies and for creating a signature sound which celebrated the Southern California culture of surfing, cars and romance.

Passports to working art studios

Ever wondered how a piece of art goes from idea to object? The Oklahoma Visual Arts Coalition’s upcoming Tulsa Art Studio Tour will open the doors of 10 Tulsa artists’ studios, where visitors will experience the creative processes and meet the artists on April 20-21 from noon until 5 p.m.

Art fans will find the Tulsa Art Studio Tour a rare opportunity to see artists in their working space, talk with them about their creations, as well as view and buy artwork.

Happy Dancing: Lips no longer official

Updated: The good news is that the song “Do You Realize” by The Flaming Lips is no longer the “Official State Rock Song Of Oklahoma.”

We here at Tulsa Today would love to take credit for this, though we’re not certain we can.  Still, we will tell ourselves that we may have had just a bit to do with it.

The State Historical Society sponsored the selection process, where songs were nominated en masse and winnowed down by a committee of People Who Should Know About Such Things. Then there was a period of on-line voting where the peasants could voice their opinions. There were glitches along the way. There was dissent in the committee and there was probably ballot-stuffing, though we are not alleging corruption.
