OK soldiers get more time to vote

The State Senate approved Senate Bill 718 Monday to make voting easier for military personnel who are not registered to vote and return from overseas service after the registration deadline.  The House is the next stop for the measure by Sen. Don Barrington.

“Oklahoma was recently criticized by the Pew Center on the States for not providing our returning military enough time to vote.  This measure will give more of our military the chance to let their voice be heard in the election process by extending the time in which they can return home and still be able to cast a provisional ballot without being registered,” said Barrington

Currently, military personnel who are not registered to vote and return home less than 25 days before an election, which is the voter registration deadline, are allowed to cast a provisional ballot.  SB 718 extends the grace period for those individuals to ninety days.  Therefore, any military personnel who return home within ninety days of an election will be allowed to cast a provisional ballot, without being registered to vote prior to the deadline.
“For men and women who have been deployed overseas, the last thing on their mind when they return is whether or not they’re registered to vote.  It’s something that can easily slip one’s mind until right up to the election,” said Barrington.

“Their main concern is spending time with family and friends, resting and getting acclimated back to life in the states.  Returning home from war zones can be hard for some and we don’t want to punish any of these brave souls for accidentally forgetting to register to vote when they’ve just returned from doing such a tremendous and selfless service for their country.”
The bill would apply to any service member and their spouse who has been honorably discharged, is on official leave, or whose service or overseas employment has been terminated.

Fallin, Edmondson leading governor candidates

Democrat Drew Edmondson and Republican Mary Fallin lead the possible primary elections for governor next year, a new survey shows.

The SoonerPoll, conducted by Keith Gaddie and Bill Shapard, shows Edmondson leading Lt. Governor Jari Askins 41.9-28.7 percent, and Fallin leading Congressman Tom Cole 53 to 31.1 percent; Senator Randy Brogdon drew 1.3 percent.

Said Gaddie: "We direct your attention to several interesting elements of the survey, including the strong name familiarity and positives of Rep. Fallin, her strength in the trial heat across geography and especially among core conservatives and high-propensity voters, and her strong support across men, women, married and single voters.

"In the Democratic primary, note the strength of AG Edmondson but also the notable degree to which many high-propensity voters are not familiar with any of the aspirants. My initial reaction is that Randy Brogdon (R- Dist 34, Owasso) is definitely smoking something if he thinks he has any shot at all to become governor.
"Second, it is evident that Cole’s ID is weak even among Republicans, and his favorables (36.3 to 12.7 unfavorable) are weaker among those core GOP voters who are the most likely to vote. If you run this primary, Cole has to pull down Mary’s favorables (never been done before) (56.7 to 18.9 percent unfavorable) and also pump up his ID and his own favorables outside the district. "Askins can overhaul Edmondson, but its the same kind of problem — displace the longest-serving DEM who has strong favorables in the party (44.6-20.6 versus 32.3-20.7 for Askins).

"The biggest shock for Sen. Brogdon will be that NO ONE KNOWS OF HIM (3.8 percent favorable, 3.6 percent unfavorable).

"The biggest shock for Cole, even with his polling experience, will be his lack of name ID. These numbers are not as good as Istook’s in 2005. Fallin– strong with core conservatives. Can run hard against Cole on his get-along approach, failure in 2008 US House races, ouster as RNCC chair," Gaddie concluded.

“Carbon Cap-And-Trade” a double tax on consumers

An unnamed industry group and Chicago market-trader friends of President Obama are reportedly encouraging Congress to impose a “carbon cap-and-tax-and-tax” plan on its own customers, a plan that would dramatically raise energy prices in the midst of an economic recession, the Congress of Racial Equality charged in a national speech.

“Our sources on Capitol Hill tell me that a small handful of energy industry insiders are working with a small handful in Congress to push policies that are extraordinarily anti-consumer and anti-affordable energy,” said Niger Innis, National Spokesman for the Congress of Racial Equality, in a speech to the annual meeting of the Conservative Political Action Committee recently.

“This group is reportedly trying to cut a backroom deal with Democratic leaders to force on consumers not only a carbon cap-and-tax scheme, but a carbon tax on top of that,” Innis said.  “Now, let me repeat this so you all understand: this industry association is asking Democratic leaders to impost a ‘carbon cap-and-tax-and-tax’ on its own customers.”
"This is an outrage on so many levels it makes your head spin,” Innis said.  “This comes from an industry sector that has a reputation for providing some of the lowest cost power in America.  This comes at a time when this group’s customers can barely afford their current utility bills.”

“Proposals like this threaten to light the fires of a consumer revolt aimed at industry – instead of a revolt that should be aimed at those extremists who want to see energy prices go up,” Innis warned.

“The staff leadership of this industry group claim that they need to put these anti-consumer cards on the table so that can get a ‘seat at the table,’” Innis explained.  “They claim that if they don’t buy a seat at the table, they will be ‘on the menu.’  This is the excuse of collaborators, my friends.  These people don’t have to buy a seat at the table.  They already own a seat by virtue of the fact that they provide affordable energy to millions of people each and every day.  Without them, much of our nation goes dark and our people suffer and die.”

“If that fact alone doesn’t earn you a seat at Nancy Pelosi’s table, it’s clearly time to re-think who you are having lunch with,” Innis said.

Innis called upon “all energy industry leaders to publicly repudiate support for anti-consumer plans like a ‘carbon cap-and-tax-and-tax.’

“These leaders should publicly reiterate their commitment to fighting federal mandates that will drive up the cost of energy for their own customers,” Innis said.  “For I can promise you one thing: CORE will not stand silently by and watch Washington insiders try to sell out the interests of the poor and minorities by doing backroom deals with extremists Members of Congress to encourage even higher energy prices.”

“We are going to continue to speak out against all who conspire to raise the price of energy and hurt low-income families across America,” he said. “And, believe me, if these industry leaders continue flirting with plans that sell out consumers, we are going to start naming names.”

Limbaugh challenges Obama to debate

World Net Daily is reporting that with Democrats targeting talk-show host Rush Limbaugh as the de facto head of the Republican Party, the radio giant is now inviting President Barack Obama on his show for a face-to-face debate about policies important to America’s future.

"I am offering President Obama to come on this program without staffers, without a teleprompter, without note cards to debate me on the issues," Limbaugh said on his program today.

"Let’s talk about free markets versus government control. Let’s talk about nationalizing health care and raising taxes on small business. … Let’s talk about illegal immigration and lawlessness on the borders. Let’s talk about massive deficits and the destroying the opportunities of future generations." The offer comes in the wake of a published report by the Politico stating White House insiders have been targeting the No. 1 rated host now that President Bush is out of office.
Limbaugh said the debate could take place without spending a single dime of taxpayer money, offering to fly Obama to South Florida at the host’s own expense, lodge him at the five-star Breakers Hotel in Palm Beach, and even feed him $100-a-pound beef."

If you take me out," Limbaugh said addressing Obama directly, "if you can wipe me out in a debate and prove to the rest of America that what I say is senseless and wrong, do you realize you will own the United States of America? You will have no opposition."

"You’ve debated the best out there. You are one of the most gifted public speakers of our age, I would think, Mr. President, you would jump at this opportunity," he added.

Regarding his being placed on a so-called "enemies list," Limbaugh offered this analysis:

"It’s amazing. In 1972, Richard Nixon had an enemies list, and the media was outraged by this.  They were outraged. At the same time, those who weren’t on it were a little jealous. But they were outraged that a president would engage in this kind of behavior toward the media. Now they go after a private citizen. Rahm Emanuel is leading the team going after a private citizen, and the Drive-By Media applaud, get on board and help further the mission. We live in different times."

As WND previously reported, Limbaugh has verbally slammed the economic stimulus plan of Obama and the Democrat-led Congress, calling it an assault on capitalism intentionally designed to harm the private sector and lead to bigger government.

"This is a full-fledged attack on capitalism, and the leftists Democrats have been seeking this for the longest time," Limbaugh said. "That’s why they can’t stop themselves. It is Christmas morning every day for these people. There’s nobody that can stop them."

The 27th Annual OKC St. Patrick’s Day

“Governor Brad O’Henry said, ‘Yes we can’ have the 27th Annual St. Patrick’s Day Parade in Oklahoma City by proclaiming Saturday, March 14th the official date for the annual event. Lining up at noon, then marching at 1 p.m. from Sheridan and Walker and heading all the way to Bricktown, the parade will celebrate two groups, those who are Irish and those who wish they were,” said St. Patrick’s Day Parade spokesman and organizer Paula Jones.
The St. Patrick’s Day Parade Committee met with Gov. O’Henry last month and the photographs are available upon request from stpatsparade@cox.net.

On March 2nd at 1:30 p.m. the St. Patrick’s Committee met with House Speaker Chris O’Benge to officially proclaim the support of the Legislature for the parade. Tuesday, March 3, the group was planning to meet with Oklahoma City Mayor Mick Cornett. "Mayor Cornett agrees with us that every ‘Big League City’ must have a St. Patrick’s Day Parade to ensure the quality of life that other large cities enjoy and celebrate,” Jones said.

“The Parade’s Grand Marshall is Integris Health President Stan Hupfeld. Integris is the premier health care provider in Oklahoma with 13 hospitals operating in the Sooner State.  A native of Dallas, Texas, Hupfeld has been an admininstrator of hospitals in the Lone Star State and was a member of the University of Texas 1963 National Football Championship Team, but we decided to have him as Grand Marshall anyway!” Jones said.

“Thousands of man hours have already been put into the annual parade and we expect the largest crowd ever wearing the green of St. Patrick, the patron saint of Ireland,” Jones said.
“There are very strict requirements from the City of Oklahoma City in order to get permission to have a parade, while many organizations have been unable to meet these goals, we remained undaunted.  While some parades were rejected, Oklahoma City officials said, YES YOU CAN have the St. Patrick’s Parade in Oklahoma City,” Jones said.
“We are praying for great weather so all of the planning and arrangements will provide Oklahomans a wonderful opportunity to celebrate the life of St. Patrick and the traditions that have brought such a great legacy of hard-work and wonderful people to our great nation,” Jones said.
