Special election filing begins today

TulsaSkylineChandlerPkCandidate filing for the Tulsa area State Senate District 11 Special Election begins today and continues through Wednesday.

Filing will be open from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday at the State Election Board’s office, Room B-6 in the basement of the State Capitol, 2300 N Lincoln Boulevard in Oklahoma City. The office will be open on Monday to handle candidate filings. Most state offices are closed Monday for Martin Luther King Jr. Day.

The election will fill the unexpired term of former State Sen. Jabar Shumate, D-Tulsa, who resigned earlier this month. The district includes parts of Tulsa and Osage Counties.

OKMULGEE, Okla. – Pending certification of the election results by the MCN Election Board Friday, Jan. 16 at 5 p.m., Louis Hicks will be sworn in as the second chief of the Muscogee (Creek) Nation at a ceremony Jan. 17 at 5 p.m. at the MCN Mound Auditorium.

MCN Supreme Court Justice Leah Harjo-Ware will swear in Hicks, who was elected as the new second chief in a special election Jan. 10.

Release of medical records sparks HIPAA questions

OKLAHOMA CITY – Confidential medical records of several patients were disclosed in 2013 by the Oklahoma Medical Licensure and Supervision Board to lawyers suing Tulsa spine surgeon Steve Anagnost.

The private medical records, which are protected from public disclosure by the federal Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA), were part of printed transcripts and video depositions that involved almost two dozen patients Anagnost had treated.

Owasso approves public service tax

OwassoHalfPennyBy Oklahoma law, municipalities are funded from sales tax while the 77 counties within the state are funded by property tax. For a growing small city like Owasso, the revenue stream doesn’t always keep up with the cost of delivery of police, fire and street services – especially if that tax is below average.

Update: Tuesday (76.2 percent) of the 2,111 voters who cast ballots approved the measure.

Owasso citizens voted to increase the sales tax for the City from 3 percent to 3.5 percent which, including all sales taxes, will raise the total rate to 8.917 percent. By comparison, city officials note, Claremore at 9.333 percent and Sapulpa at 9.5 percent would be higher, but Tulsa at 8.517 percent, Broken Arrow and Jenks both at 8.417 percent would be lower.
