OKMULGEE, Okla. – Muscogee (Creek) Nation citizens elected a new second chief Jan. 10 in a special election runoff as tribal employee Louis Hicks defeated his opponent, former principal chief A.D. Ellis, according to unofficial results released by the MCN Election Board.

Hicks received 65 percent of the vote with 2,010 votes, while Ellis garnered 1,070 votes. Hicks won a majority in all 18 voting precincts, as well as the absentee ballots.

Tulsa’s Jabar Shumate (Democrat District 11) announced his resignation last week and Monday Gov. Mary Fallin set the dates for a special election to fill the unexpired term.

Fallin issued a proclamation setting the filing period for the special election from Jan. 19-21. If necessary, a special primary election will be April 7, with a general election June 9.

If a primary isn’t needed, the special general election will be April 7.

TULSA, Okla.—Two Tribal Special Assistant U.S. Attorneys, one each from the Osage Nation and Cherokee Nation, were sworn-in at an investiture ceremony Wednesday and will assist with improving public safety in tribal communities, announced Danny C. Williams Sr., United States Attorney for the Northern District.

“Indian Country is a significant priority and my office is committed to building and sustaining safe tribal communities in the Northern District,” said U.S. Attorney Williams. “The Tribal SAUSAs will assist in key prosecution areas which derive from federal jurisdiction over crimes occurring in Indian land to include drug trafficking, sexual abuse, and violence against women.”

Federal Grand Jury indictments announced

TulsaJusticeThe results of the December 2014 Federal Grand Jury were announced Wednesday by Danny C. Williams Sr., United States Attorney for the Northern District of Oklahoma.

The following individuals have been charged with violations of United States law in indictments returned by the Grand Jury. The return of an indictment is a method of informing a defendant of alleged federal crimes which must be proven in a court of law beyond a reasonable doubt to overcome a defendant’s presumption of innocence.
