ROMULUS, Mich. – U.S. Customs and Border Protection agriculture specialists made a first-in-the-nation interception of a potentially destructive moth at the Detroit Metropolitan Airport earlier this year.
According to a departmental release September 1, the initial discovery took place in January after an agriculture detector canine alerted CBP staff to luggage from Ghana during a routine inspection. Closer examination of corn and seeds found within the luggage revealed a small, winged insect, which U.S. Department of Agriculture specialists later identified as a non-native straw crest moth (Mesophleps silacella) on Aug. 12, and records indicate this a first encounter with the species at a U.S. port of entry.
U.S. Customs and Border Protection is continuing nationwide recruitment with multiple virtual events in the month of August, including webinars for air interdiction agent, U.S. Border Patrol agent, and CBP officer positions along the Northern Border. The agency will also host a CBP-wide virtual career expo highlighting a variety of career paths across the organization.
Investigations target illicit imports and protect U.S. businesses from unfair competition
WASHINGTON—U.S. Customs and Border Protection announced today that it has uncovered more than $1 billion in additional duties owed under the Enforce and Protect Act, which authorizes CBP to investigate and stop duty evasion schemes like illegal transshipment, misclassification, and undervaluation. This milestone is a first in the program’s 10-year history and is 300% above the program’s annual average.
“CBP’s EAPA program supports the America First Trade Policy, which focuses on protecting American businesses and workers,” said CBP Commissioner Rodney S. Scott. “By enforcing antidumping and countervailing duty laws, we are creating a level playing field for domestic industries.”
