NORTHEAST
Bell Cow: August 11. Elevation 1 ft. below normal, water 85 and muddy. Bass slow. Crappie fair on minnows at night. Catfish good on cut bait and chicken liver at night. Report submitted by Gary Emmons, game warden stationed in Lincoln County.

Birch: August 12. Elevation above normal, water upper 70s and murky. Channel catfish good on chicken liver and worms. Blue catfish good on cut shad. All other fishing slow. Report submitted by David Clay, game warden stationed in Osage County.

Physics prof a victim of ‘double standard’

IntelligentDesignBall State University president Jo Ann Gora stated that to allow physics professor Eric Hedin to present intelligent design as a valid scientific theory would “violate the academic integrity” of the course Hedin was teaching.

In a statement to Ball State faculty and staff, Gora said: “Intelligent design is overwhelmingly deemed by the scientific community as a religious belief and not a scientific theory …. To allow intelligent design to be presented to science students as a valid scientific theory would violate the academic integrity of the course as it would fail to accurately represent the consensus of science scholars.”

Updated: U.S. Senator Tom Coburn, M.D. (R-OK) announced the schedule for a series of town hall meetings that will take place in August at various locations across Oklahoma. Dr. Coburn will take questions and address important issues for Oklahoma and the nation at each event.

“I am eager to hear the concerns of Oklahomans and inform them of my legislative efforts in the Senate,” said Dr. Coburn.

Is Barack Obama our King George?Opinion:  When President Obama hawks the wonders of the misnamed Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act, I’m reminded of those “As Seen on TV” products.

True believers ridiculed critics of the Independent Payment Advisory Board and its unchecked power to ration health care. They were impressed by the $575 billion cut to Medicare, although lower payments lead physicians to accept fewer Medicare patients. They cheered because 11 million Americans will be added to the Medicaid rolls over the next ten years. While Medicaid looks like is a good deal with its low co-pays, provider payments are so low that only one-third of physicians accept new Medicaid patients.

The following remarks are excerpts from Governor Fallin’s acceptance speech for the Thomas Jefferson Freedom Award during the 40th annual meeting of the American Legislative Exchange Council (ALEC). The remarks are as prepared for delivery.

The Thomas Jefferson Freedom award is ALEC’s highest honor, given annually to a current or former public official who has established an exemplary record of advancing the fundamental Jeffersonian principles of free markets, limited government, federalism and individual liberty as a nationally recognized leader.

Governor Fallin joins other past recipients including: President Ronald Reagan, President George H.W. Bush, President George W. Bush, Texas Governor Rick Perry, Louisiana Governor Bobby Jindal, former speaker of the House Newt Gingrich and former Mississippi Governor Haley Barbour.
